Who is S.T.A.R.
History
The S.T.A.R. initiative originated in 1985 with four patients discharged from the Maricopa Medical Center Psychiatric Annex. These individuals came together to offer peer support for those transitioning out of psychiatric care, aiming to provide support, education, and companionship to prevent readmission to a psychiatric unit. By 1987, the group established itself as a 501c3 non-profit organization in Arizona, marking the inception of the state's first peer recovery agency for behavioral health recipients. Initially gathering twice a week as a support group, S.T.A.R. has since expanded to operate four program facilities totaling approximately 60 hours weekly, catering to over 500 individuals each year.
